"Star" of Control Room Visits Lee Rumbarger's RHE 309s Class
Cpt. Josh Rushing, the centcom spokesperson featured in Jehane Noujaim's documentary Control Room (2004), made a surprise visit to Lee Rumbarger's Rhe 309s class on Tues. Rushing was in town to participate in a screening and panel discussion of the film, which Lee recently screened for her Rhetoric of the Homefront class , when one of Lee's students recognized him on campus and invited him to meet Lee and the class. Rushing, who left the Marines after 15 years of service as a result of being reprimanded for speaking about the film to the media, is a graduate of UT and a former student of DRC director John Ruszkiewicz.
I happened to be in PAR 6 when the spur-of-the-moment arrangements for the visit went down and asked Lee if I could sit in on her class. By coincidence, I had just finished screening the film for my RHE 306 class the day before.
Rushing gave a 30 minute presentation about his experiences in the military and the need for young people to become better media consumers. This was followed by a 10-15 Q and A session.
It was a very cool moment for Lee, her students, and the CWRL. Barry Glassner and Josh Rushing in the same week? Wow.
