Interactive Old School Panoramic Maps of Texas
Long, long, long before the launch of GoogleEarth, illustrators were producing panoramic bird's-eye maps of American cities, including these found on the Amon Carter Museum Website. The curators of this online exhibit have posted a collection of more than fifty nineteenth century maps of various Texas cities in interactive flash format. Visitors can zoom in on these maps to check out cool little details that include buildings, trains, carriages, riverboats, and people at work and play.

Google Earth Video Tour of My Class Locations
I'm in the process of developing a aerial map tour of important locations for my Fall 2005 rhetoric students. These will include libraries, computer labs, and the building where I hold office hours. The video, a draft of which I'm posting here without audio, is being created with GoogleEarth and CamStudio, a free screen recorder program. I intend to include a voice-over narration on my final cut.

  Images of UT Campus
Looking for an aerial photo of the stadium? How about a shot of Jester, the George Washington statue, or the LBJ Library? I found all of this and more online via UT's mainpage. Simply click on "Campus Parking and Maps," then follow the link to "Images of Campus" on the left side of the page (or save yourself some work and use this link).

These images are copyrighted by by the university but may be used for "personal, non-profit use." In other words, anyone's free to use these photos so long as they're not trying to make a buck in the process.

Broadcast Machine: Publish RSS / Torrent Video Channels
Via Wired News:
Broadcast Machine: Publish RSS / Torrent Video Channels:
Broadcast Machine is software you install on your website to easily publish video files. It gives you the option of using torrent technology to reduce or eliminate bandwidth costs, even when you are posting high quality video to thousands of people. Broadcast Machine is free, open source software, and is designed for easy installation. It features an intuitive interface, integrated torrent creation, and flexible channel management. Broadcast Machine also creates a browsable archive of videos on your website. But the real purpose of the software is to be the perfect publishing tool for our video player that will be released in July-- Broadcast Machine creates channels that, when viewed in the player, give people a TV-like viewing experience.

  Vlog Updates
Since last February I've been playing around with Svein Høier and Jon Hoem's technique for videoblogging with blogger. While most video blogs (or vlogs/vblogs) use a secondary link page for each video post, these gentlemen from Norway have come up with a way to insert embedded video in a blogger post using the post link field. After some tweaking, I came up with a configuration that worked with my blog design. In the course of arriving at this solution, I created a series of prototype and mock-up videoblogs.
Anyway, I'm straightening up my blogger dashboard and dumping these blogs, which you can read about here. In the interest of housecleaning, I've also stripped my original (and clunky) vlog of its video links.

For examples of how embedded video posts work, see "Chicago Book Artist Craig Jobson" (July 10, 2005) and "Introducing Embedded Video" (April 17, 2005).

  Chicago Book Artist Craig Jobson

Craig Jobson is a book artist, publisher, and faculty member at Chicago's Columbia College. He also happens to hold two degrees from from UT-- a B.A. in English and American Literature and a Studio Art B.F.A. I interviewed Craig last year for a documentary project I'm producing about the popularity of dominoes in rural communities throughout Texas and the greater South. In this clip, Craig discusses a series of books he wrote, illustrated, and literally constructed from scratch that deal, at least indirectly, with the game of dominoes. The clip was included in a video sample for a grant proposal. It does not begin to do justice to Craig's work, which could be the subject of its own documentary.
