  Introducing Embedded Video

My weblog is now configured to post embedded video. The trick, which I picked up from a tutorial by Svein Höier and Jon Hoem of the Arts and Media Department at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, allows you to incorporate video content into your Blogger weblog using the title/link function. While the tweak is simple enough in theory, it did take some work to get the bugs out and produce a template that actually worked in a variety of browsers. In my earlier attempts to create a video blog, I kept running into the problem of finding a good way to get the the text of the post to wrap smoothly around the video content. I haven't checked this page out on a Mac yet, but it looks like I've finally figured it out...(fingers crossed)...

  Video Blogs Using a blogger tweak developed by Svein Høier and Jon Hoem, I've generated some prototype embedded-video-capable weblogs. You can find the code for my most straight-forward design here. The tweak allows you to use the "post link" feature of blogger to embed Quicktime playable video files in a blog post.

NOTE: The Following Video Weblogs have since been disabled...

Sample Blogger Video Weblog #1 - Note that in this design, video files are designated by a generic photo place holder that reads "click to play." You can create unique place holders, but this is much easier. I've also removed the date and timestamps for the posts that make up this weblog. The can be added again using the blogger settings menu. .

Sample Blogger Video Weblog #2 - Same basic design as #1 but with date and timestamp entact. It also reproduces my standard menu and links. The first video window will not work because there's actually no video play; I plugged a standard www. link into the post link window, which generated the standard placeholder. The invitation to download the code in the right column will actually take you the code my original vlog site.


Sample Blogger Video Weblog #3 - All the video for this site is hosted on CWRL servers, but unlike #1 and #2, the remaining content and archives for this weblog are handled by blogger. Notice that this design employs unique place holders for each video. This took a little extra work.   Music Videos Available Online I don't know about the legality of downloading these music videos but somebody obviously put some time into this list and the least you could do is have a look. Seriously, some of these links are pulled from artist sites, while others were obviously recorded from MTV during the pre-tivo era. Just don't trade or try to make a buck off them and you should be ok.

This group is proposing to provide free, permanant video, audio, and image hosting for artists, students, and activists. This could be a great resource for CWRL instructors. Like archive.org (one of their partners), the purpose here is to encourage sharing, inspiration, and adaptation.

  "Star" of Control Room Visits Lee Rumbarger's RHE 309s Class Cpt. Josh Rushing, the centcom spokesperson featured in Jehane Noujaim's documentary Control Room (2004), made a surprise visit to Lee Rumbarger's Rhe 309s class on Tues. Rushing was in town to participate in a screening and panel discussion of the film, which Lee recently screened for her Rhetoric of the Homefront class , when one of Lee's students recognized him on campus and invited him to meet Lee and the class. Rushing, who left the Marines after 15 years of service as a result of being reprimanded for speaking about the film to the media, is a graduate of UT and a former student of DRC director John Ruszkiewicz.

I happened to be in PAR 6 when the spur-of-the-moment arrangements for the visit went down and asked Lee if I could sit in on her class. By coincidence, I had just finished screening the film for my RHE 306 class the day before.

Rushing gave a 30 minute presentation about his experiences in the military and the need for young people to become better media consumers. This was followed by a 10-15 Q and A session.

It was a very cool moment for Lee, her students, and the CWRL. Barry Glassner and Josh Rushing in the same week? Wow.

  My video blog updated With some footage I've shot for my domino documentary and a clip of my kids dancing on a floor covered with pretzels. Still looking for a real use for the vblog. This tweak uses the link/title function of a blogger post to play embedded video.
